What Does a Reserve Parachute Really Do?


The Backup Every Paraglider Hopes Never to Use
Ask a paraglider pilot about the most important piece of equipment they carry, and many people expect the answer to be the wing.
It isn't.
While the wing makes flight possible, there's another piece of equipment tucked neatly inside the harness that every pilot hopes they will never need—a reserve parachute.
Unlike the colourful wing overhead, the reserve spends almost its entire life hidden from view. Most pilots complete hundreds of flights without ever seeing it outside of annual inspections or repacking sessions. Yet, despite remaining unseen, it is one of the most important safety systems in free flight.
Its job isn't to make flying better.
Its job is to be there when everything else has gone wrong.
Not a Second Wing
One of the biggest misconceptions among beginners is that a reserve parachute works like a spare paraglider. It doesn't.
A reserve parachute is not designed to continue your flight or help you glide to a chosen landing area. Once deployed, its purpose is much simpler—to slow your descent enough to improve your chances of surviving an emergency.
Think of it as the aviation equivalent of an airbag in a car. You never drive hoping to use one, but you're grateful it's there if something unexpected happens.
Unlike your paraglider, which is built to fly efficiently across the landscape, a reserve parachute is designed to descend as safely and as predictably as possible.
When Would a Pilot Use One?
Every pilot is trained with a simple principle: fly the paraglider first.
Most situations in paragliding can be managed by the pilot. Small collapses, turbulence or unexpected movements are all part of normal flying and are usually corrected through proper technique and active control.
A reserve parachute comes into the picture only when the wing is no longer recoverable or the pilot has lost the ability to regain safe control.
Examples might include a severe structural problem, an unrecoverable cravat, multiple twists that prevent control, or a situation where the wing enters a dangerous flight mode that cannot be safely stopped before there is enough altitude remaining.
The decision is never based on panic. It's based on recognising that continuing to fight the wing has become more dangerous than deploying the reserve.
Experienced pilots often say the hardest part isn't pulling the reserve—it's deciding when to pull it.
How Does a Reserve Parachute Work?
Unlike a skydiver's parachute, which is deployed after freefall, a reserve parachute is launched into the airflow while the paraglider is still attached to the pilot.
The reserve is packed inside a deployment bag within the harness. If an emergency occurs, the pilot pulls the reserve handle, removing the deployment bag from its container before throwing it forcefully into clear air.
As the deployment bag moves away, the parachute opens rapidly and begins supporting the pilot's weight.
From that point onward, the objective changes completely. Instead of continuing the flight, the pilot prepares for a controlled emergency landing beneath the reserve.
Every second matters, which is why reserve deployment is practised repeatedly during training and simulator exercises.
Why Pilots Practise Throwing Something They Hope Never to Use
One of the most valuable exercises during safety training is practising a reserve deployment.
Not because pilots expect to use it often, but because emergencies leave very little time for hesitation.
The reserve handle must become familiar. The movement should feel instinctive. In a real emergency, there is rarely enough time to stop and think about where the handle is or how hard to throw it.
Many SIV (Simulation d'Incident en Vol) courses include reserve deployment training using suspended harnesses or specialised simulators. Some pilots also rehearse the movement mentally before every flying season.
Like any emergency procedure, preparation is far easier on the ground than it is several hundred metres above it.
Does Pulling the Reserve Solve Everything?
Deploying the reserve is a major step, but it doesn't automatically end the emergency.
In many situations, the original paraglider wing remains attached to the pilot. If it continues flying normally, it can interfere with the reserve by pulling in another direction or causing the system to descend less predictably.
For this reason, pilots are taught specific techniques to reduce the influence of the main wing whenever possible, depending on the situation and the type of equipment being flown.
Even after a successful deployment, the pilot continues making decisions until reaching the ground.
The reserve doesn't replace skill—it gives the pilot another chance.
Different Reserves for Different Flying
Reserve parachutes have evolved significantly over the years.
Traditional round reserves remain popular because of their simplicity, reliability and quick opening characteristics.
More recently, square and cruciform designs have become increasingly common. These generally offer improved stability and lower descent rates, helping reduce oscillation during descent.
For high-performance pilots and competition flying, some systems use steerable reserves, allowing limited directional control after deployment. These are specialised pieces of equipment intended for experienced pilots and particular flying environments.
Whichever design is used, the goal remains the same: bring the pilot safely back to the ground.
A Piece of Equipment That Needs Looking After
Unlike many parts of a paraglider, a reserve parachute spends most of its life packed away.
That doesn't mean it can be forgotten.
Manufacturers recommend regular inspections and repacking because the fabric and lines need to remain correctly arranged for reliable deployment. Moisture, improper storage and long periods without repacking can affect how the parachute opens.
For this reason, experienced pilots treat reserve maintenance with the same importance as wing inspections.
A reserve that isn't properly maintained is simply another piece of packed fabric.
The Most Reassuring Piece of Equipment You Carry
Interestingly, the best reserve parachute is often the one that is never used.
Its presence gives pilots confidence—not confidence to take unnecessary risks, but confidence to fly knowing that an additional layer of safety exists should the unexpected occur.
Every flight begins with the hope that the reserve remains exactly where it belongs, tucked securely inside the harness.
And if a pilot completes an entire flying career without ever deploying it, that's not a sign the reserve wasn't needed. It's a sign that good training, sound judgement and careful decision-making did their job.
Because in paragliding, the reserve parachute isn't there to make ordinary flights possible.
It's there for the extraordinary moment when having one can make all the difference.
